The effect of stress on the body and mind

When someone is in a situation that causes them stress it has a profound effect on the entire body-mind system.   A bodily reaction is triggered and it’s happening automatically and on an unconscious level.  The body releases adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol.

Now this physical and biological change is normal – it is a protective mechanism which we call the fight and flight response – and you do not have to be in actual danger to set it off as it can occur at a psychological level by remembering or imagining something fearful.   If the adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol is not utilised by the body then an excess builds up and it is this that has a detrimental effect on the body.

If the stress is brief the body’s system will kick in and reduce the stress levels and return the body to normal.   However, if the stress response continues for a prolonged period with inadequate rest and relaxation or physical exercise, the mind and body will eventually suffer. 

Physical and mental health problems can then arise such as headaches, insomnia, panic attacks, high blood pressure and stress related conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Hypertension.

Mental distress has become very common – to the extent that it is now factored in the Health and Safety at Work Act.
